DAY 16 of #skinemmies2018 and my choice of oil which is Squalane. First of all there is a difference between Squalane and Squalene. Squalene is naturally occurring in our skin’s sebum and hence is part of the protective oily film we have on the skin. Naturally occuring Squalene is also an antioxidant and is a precursor for steroids, one being cholesterol. The most common confusion is between Squalane and Squalene. I learned a lot from the sciency blogger behind simpleskincarescience.com If you are nerdy, I suggest you check his blog out. He also has a lot of references. I find his view on Squalane to be a bit overly opportunistic but I salute his thorough writing. . In retail, I have seen both Squalene and Squalane, both are nowadays mostly vegetable derived. But Squalane seems to be the most common in retail. Squalane is a stabilized form of Squalene mening it has a longer shelf life. Unfortunately the more stable version seems to result in that squalane does not have the antioxidant capacity that naturally occuring Squalene has. But that does not bother me. I get my aox elsewhere and I prefer oils with long shelf life. Rmb when you buy flaxseed oil which I have used as a dietary supplement, it says to consume within a month after opening! In oils for skincare vitamin E or rosmary extract is often added to prolong shelf life. . Squalene produced in the skin can also undergo oxidation and when it oxidizes certain reactions/breakdown products form that can trigger inflammation (bad news!). Because of its structure Squalane is an excellent oil for all skin types, even oily and acne prone. My experience however is that Dermatologists often disagree whether or not to use oil and or oil containing moisturizers when you have oily skin. One thing to bear in mind is that oils are not replacement for other skincare ingredients like humectants. In my own experience oils works best when I use small quantities, 2-3 tiny drops is all I need, perhaps mixed into your favorite moisturizer. But I don’t always use them. Squalane almost has the texture of something like silicon. It absorbs really well and leaves a velvet finish and a healthy glow. What’s your fave oil?

Morning routine taking it to the #humidititties  #AlliesOfSkin Fresh Slate Purifying Cleanser + Masque left on for 10-15 minutes. I loooove this formula and so happy to hear about the updated packaging to better suit the formula. I love when a brand takes on customer feedback as consistently as @alliesofskin . Decongesting and very balancing! .#Skinceuticals Serum 10. 10% L-AA Serum for pigmentation, antioxidants protection and collagen synthesis. This has just about become too oxidised for use - which is sad as there’s 40-50% left. Otherwise, exceptional, water-weight formula that hasn’t irritated my skin with daily use.  #FirstAidBeauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum for additional antioxidant protection + Skin-soothing. I can’t believe I haven’t seen this talked about more often. A very viscous gel that is soooo hydrating. Contains both Hyaluronic Acid and Sodium Hyaluronate.  #AlumierMD Moisture Matte SPF40.

We wrote a 101 post on treating acne last week that went over some popular OTC acne treating ingredients. But what should you look for when comparing 2 products with the same level of the same active ingredient? Let’s look at Neutrogena’s rapid clear and Skin Pharmacy’s overnight salicylic acid lotion, where both products contain 2% salicylic acid. Even when choosing acne products, it’s a good idea to take a glance at the first few inactive ingredients listed. A lot of them will contain additional drying ingredients like alcohol denat and astringent witch hazel, as seen in the Neutrogena gel. This may work for some with fairly oily skin, but can be entirely too harsh for others (say hello inflamed acne + angry ring of dry peeling skin!). On the other hand, Skin Pharmacy features penetration enhancer ethoxydiglycol (also often found in classic CE ferulic formulas). Between these 2, we would bet on this one to be the gentler of the two. So if 2% salicylic acid tends to dry you out or cause irritation, we would opt for trying skin pharmacy over Neutrogena. #decodethatIL #notcreatedequal #dontangertheacne
